Today’s “rant” – insubordination

“If you work for a company that promises stability you can bet that company is going to fold” ~Mark Hurst

Many of us broadcasters long for the past where stability was the norm. You programmed your stations, launched a website to do nothing more than reflect your brand and regurgitate your news and network products and measured success by your audience and revenue share. The measurement model may still be relevant but the rest is clinging for a heartbeat.

Our customers (advertisers, viewers/users, stockholders and employees) are looking for so much more from us. They are begging us to defy the past and invent the future to drive their success. That, by definition, forces us into instability, experimentation and the willingness to fail.

I, too, hate failure and want to allow gravity to pull me back to my comfort zone. So let’s, together, form a pact. Let’s not only allow failure but praise insubordination. You in?

Today’s “rant” – complaining

OK, so you have identified a problem and have decided to complain about it. I say, “Right on! Complain away freely!”

But then offer a solution! One of my biggest pet peeves – those who complain but stop there. Stop depending on others. You have a great opportunity to move forward when you uncover a “challenge.”  In fact, complaining leads to an obligation to solve the problem.

So keep up the complaining. Complain about every setback, glitch, quandary and obstruction you see but you just can’t stop there. You MUST offer solutions or you must give up your right to complain.
